Large wildfowl counts in September

Over recent years there have been occasions when Wigeon and Shoveler numbers have jumped up, this morning Marek found this happened with the latter, 51 is a great number and this prompted me to compiling some data on high counts;

Shoveler

51/1st Sept 2016
33/2nd Oct 2015
52/21st Sept & 71/3rd Oct 2014
39/1st Sept, 44/7th, 61/10th 2012
26/8th Oct 2010
45/9th Oct 2009
28/27th Sept 2008
65/18th Oct 1998
52/24th Nov 1994
23/28th Sept 1982
36/21st Oct 1981
48/5th Nov 1980

Winter highs are mostly explained by frozen waters on all but a few local lakes

110/7th Jan & 130+22nd 2005
100+ Jan 2004
45/10th Dec 50/17th Dec 1999
52/1st Jan 1996
37/10th Jan 1987
25/10th Jan 1985
21/20th Feb 1984
31/17th Dec 1983

Looking at the records in date order, it is clear to see the winter trend running up to 2005 is an ever increasing number, shame nothing spectacular has happened since.

I'll cover Wigeon later
